Prominent Ear (Otoplasty)

The prominent ear problem, which many people, even in adulthood, want to hide due to genetic factors, can be solved with a simple surgery that is hidden behind the ear and lasts very quickly (around 1 hour). It is one of the most commonly performed procedures by our doctor, who combines permanent stitching and flap techniques for the safest result.

After the procedure, you can return to your daily life immediately with a bandage around your ears and resume social life without bandages within 5-7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Prominent ear surgery is generally a procedure aimed at reducing the excessive angle between the ear and the head or reconstructing the natural folds that are not apparent. It is performed behind the ear, and the safest method combines permanent stitching with tissue closure/flap technique.

It can be performed at all ages after the ear has fully developed, typically around 5-6 years old. It is not recommended at an earlier age.

Since the surgery is performed behind the ear, there won't be a visible scar. The scar behind the ear will fade over time. However, the area behind the ear is prone to keloid, so genetic predisposition or possibilities should always be considered.

The surgery can be performed at any time of the year with the necessary precautions.

In children, general anesthesia is preferred; in adults, local anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with light sedation is often chosen.

After prominent ear surgery, the patient can return home the same day. A compressive bandage is applied around both ears. After removing the bandage, a headband (such as a sports or hair band) is recommended to be worn for a few days to reduce swelling and support the ears. Mild pain can be expected, which can be managed with painkillers, and swelling or redness may last for 3-5 days.

You can return to social life the next day after the first check-up post-surgery.

Swelling and edema subside in 5-6 days but completely disappear around the first month. Some minor relaxation in the ear tissues (3-4 degrees) may occur within 6 months.

After the surgery, a compressive bandage is applied for one day. After removing the bandage, a headband is recommended for a few days. You can wash your hair once the bandages are removed. Walking can be resumed after one week and sports activities can be resumed after three weeks. It is advised not to use hair dryers for the first few days.
